About Afterschool

Latchkey Kids Need Fun, Supervision

The number of single- and two-parent working families continues to grow and with this changing family dynamic comes an increasing need to provide their home-alone children with an alternative to figuring out for themselves what to do with that time. That’s why the Children’s Services Council (CSC) has made it a high priority to provide quality non-school-hours programming to meet a variety of needs for different age groups.

After-School Programs Diverse

CSC’s After-School System is comprised of elementary and middle school programs – some traditional, for three or more hours a day, others specialized, providing opportunities to learn a new skill, such as karate or art, a few days per week. All provide opportunities for children and youth to have positive interaction with caring adults and be exposed to sports, arts and culture and other activities that could lead to lifetime work or hobbies. CSC funds 27 elementary school programs, five middle school programs and four special needs programs.

Programs Help Teens Make Healthy Choices

Youth development programs that engage teens provide them with caring adults to talk with and develop their interests and abilities as a way to deter teen pregnancy, delinquency and drug abuse. CSC has also joined in a partnership with Prime Time Palm Beach County to help ensure that all after-school programs are of the highest quality as our children deserve. CSC funds four programs with a focus on preventing teen pregnancy.
