The Beacon clubs; Creative Dance, Girls of Elegance, and Cub Scouts will walk in the parade. Parents and the community are invited to come out and view the parade and the Bed Race event that follows. This year’s theme is “Mardi Gras in May.” Art and Jazz on the Avenue will follow the Bed Race, with displays of artwork and musical performances on Atlantic Avenue.

A group of parents, The Haitian and Haitian-American Parent Support Team (HHAPST) is planning and sponsoring the event. Evelyne Joseph of Families First is the facilitator for the group. HHAPST is meeting weekly on Wednesdays, at 6:00 p.m. to plan the event. The focus of the event is for participants to experience “a taste” of the culture of Haiti, through educational presentations, performances and food-sampling. Admission is free. Event: National Women’s Health Month--Walk for Your Health

Summer is on the way and many will try to get into last year’s outfits. Walk for Your Health is a morning class that allows participants to start the day with health on their minds - stress is relieved and health issues are reduced. Participants are asked to bring a partner and walk the pounds away. This pre-summer event also includes free health information.

Event: Parent Workshop- Raising Sons vs. Raising Daughters

Is there a difference between raising sons and raising daughters, or is it simply the way society expects them to behave? Do we put pressure on boys to hide their feelings and be “tough”? What can parents do to help raise boys to be emotionally healthy? How can parents help girls achieve their potential and not accept a subservient role to males? This workshop will assist parents in finding the answers to these questions and will provide a question and answer segment for other parental concerns on the topic. “Coming of Age”, surrounds an African theme and will showcase the talents of the children in our after school program. All the costumes and props were done by our talented youths. Parents will get the opportunity to see the creative aspects of their child through song and dance. The performances will be done in the form of a musical and various foods which are indigenous to Africa will be served. Come out to this great event and get a taste of Africa!

This event is to show appreciation to the adults who have taken time out of their busy schedules to come to the evening classes. The adults were able to make improvement with the skills that they are acquiring. The graduation will be a motivational tool to encourage other adults to participate in the evening classes. These adults, if wish, they can continue to attend class to advance their learning.

Event: Washington Elementary Beacon Center Teens Youth Speak out Community Forum

This event is in partnership of YSO (Youth Speak out Television) and Prime Time of Palm Beach County. The YSO TV forum will allow the youth in our community to address their concerns about different topics, culture, and art. Our Teens worked with the YSO TV community forum with Mr. William King of (YSO) and Ms. Francis of Chit Chat Times. The students had the opportunity to learn how to operate television broadcasting equipment such as cameras, microphones, also voice techniques, and journalism. Our Beacon Center Teens have worked very hard on the forum, and they are very eager to share what they have learned with their community, families, and friends.
