The SHARE Program
The SHARE (Self Help and Resource Exchange) program is a food cooperative that helps households stretch their food budgets and increase their access to nutritious foods. For just $18 a month, households can purchase food that would cost them $40 or more in stores. The food is the same quality found in grocery stores.

Please contact your area Beacon Center to participate in the SHARE program.

JFK Middle Beacon Center
The John F. Kennedy Beacon Center provides a Youth Leadership Development Program that is comprised of two components: On Monday’s and Wednesday’s we offer Leadership Education and on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s we offer Taking Care of Business.

We use a process that prepares young people to meet the challenges of adolescence through a coordinated series of trainings, Internships and service learning projects.
We focus on College Prep, Entrepreneurship Development, Career Exploration, while teaching young people all aspects of running a successful business.

During the week of Spring Break these components come together when we go on our annual tour of various colleges and universities.

This year 31 of our young men visited nine schools in three states.  We toured Auburn and Tuskegee in Alabama, FAMU and Florida State University in Tallahassee, Clark, Georgia Tech and Morehouse in Atlanta, as well as, Fort Valley State and Albany State also in Georgia.

Thirty-seven of our young women flew round-trip from West Palm Beach to Memphis, TN. Needless to say, for some of our students this was their very first time on an airplane. During this wonderful week we had the privilege to tour Rust College, LeMoyne-Owen College and The University of Memphis. Sightseeing opportunities allowed us to visit Memphis attractions like Beale Street, the Memphis Rock N Soul Museum, Fed-Ex Forum and the time-honored tradition of seeing the Peabody Ducks march in the Grand Lobby of The Peabody Hotel. Of course, no visit to Memphis would be complete without a tour of the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Motel.

We met our aim of creating interest in higher education for each of these participants.
We fulfilled our mission of exposing them to college and broadening their choices in pursuing a post-secondary education. During the tour, students received information on tuition and financial aid, ways that they can prepare themselves for college, and a glimpse at what campus life is like, including housing and extra curricular activities.

We challenged them to expand their mind-set, they saw college life first-hand, helping them to one day make an educated decision about what’s best for them.

Once admitted, most of our students will be first generation college students. Therefore, as you can see, these college tours provided students of the JFK Beacon Center with an invaluable experience. By putting the information they need right at their fingertips, our students, both middle and high school can feel confident that higher education is a legitimate option for them and a four year degree is attainable.
