When is it OK to Leave My Child Home Alone?

There is no state law or clear guideline as to when a child is old enough to stay home alone.

Most experts agree no elementary school-age child should be left home alone. But most important, they emphasize, is a child’s maturity rather than his or her actual age.

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics web site, “children approaching adolescence (11- and 12-year-olds) should not come home to an empty house in the afternoon unless they show unusual maturity for their age.”
