April 1 marks the beginning of Drowning Prevention Awareness Month in Palm Beach County. To highlight water safety, WaterSmart Palm Beach County will hold an event at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 29, at the DeVos-Blum Family YMCA of Boynton Beach, 9600 S. Military Trail, Boynton Beach.
Among the highlights:
- The Drowning Prevention Coalition of Palm Beach County will announce the availability of vouchers for free/reduced-cost swim lessons in Palm Beach County. The vouchers are good for 6-8 swim lessons at more than 15 public pools throughout the county.
- The YMCA of South Palm Beach County will announce its Splash Bash. The event from April 16 to April 20 will allow families to get up to five free swim lessons at YMCA locations in Boynton Beach and Boca Raton.
- Presentation of a WaterSmart Hero Award to a well-known swim instructor whose battle with esophagus cancer has inspired the community.
After the press conference, media will be allowed to film/photograph children taking swim lessons at the indoor pool of the YMCA of Boynton Beach.
WaterSmart Palm Beach County is a group dedicated to water safety that is comprised of more than 20 Palm Beach County organizations, including the YMCA of South Palm Beach County, the Drowning Prevention Coalition, Children’s Services Council of Palm Beach County, pool operators, first responders and child safety advocates.
Directions: The YMCA of Boynton Beach is located at the northeast corner of South Military Trail and Old Boynton Beach Road.
