Program Offered
Broward Intensive Halfway House (BIHH) is a
state-operated secure residential treatment program
for male youths between the ages of 14 and 18.
BIHH is one of two juvenile residential facilities in
the country participating in the Faith & Community-
Based Delinquency Treatment Initiative, (FCBDTI).
The FCBDTI offers numerous treatments
with the goal of preparing the youth and his family
for a successful transition back to the community.
They provide one-to-one male mentors from either
a faith- or community-based organization, depending
upon the desires of the family. In addition to
our mentoring program, we provide extensive transition
planning including educational, vocational,
recreational, health and welfare to ensure a plan is
in place prior to their return home. Our ultimate
goal is to reduce recidivism and strengthen families
in the process.
Population Served
Our youth are court-ordered males from Palm
Beach, Broward and Dade counties, ages 14-18
years. They are committed to a high-risk residential
treatment program for 9-12 months for having
committed various offenses in the community.
Mentor Responsibilities
Our mentors are expected to meet with their youth
once a week for a minimum of one hour. We expect
the mentor to meet with the youth during their
stay at BIHH to build rapport. Once a youth is released
to the community, we expect the mentor to
continue the weekly visits. These visits are essential
due to the fact transitioning home is often stressful
for the youth and family.
Mentors are required to communicate with
their assigned aftercare coordinator twice monthly
to share how the relationship is going and to discuss
any needs. Aftercare coordinators are available
24/7 for anything the mentor needs. All mentors
attend an orientation and are interviewed to ensure
their success as a potential mentor. Mentors must
be at least 21 years old and be able to pass a background
screen paid for by the initiative. We provide
specialized mentor training and ongoing opportunities
to learn and relate with the volunteer base
Time Commitment
Mentors must commit to the program for one
year.
