Indicator: Children Living in Poverty
Importance of Indicator
Poverty is one of the top indicators used to predict outcomes because it lessens the opportunities of those children and their families to access health care and other services. Consequently, children whose family lacks the resources to meet basic needs are more likely to suffer from a wide range of social, educational, health, and behavioral problems.

2007 Poverty Guidelines
The poverty guidelines are issued each year in the Federal Register by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). The poverty guidelines are sometimes referred to as the “federal poverty level” (Federal Poverty Level). The different poverty levels are calculated by multiplying the current guidelines by 1.25 for 125 percent, 1.50 for 150 percent.
