Below are useful grantwriting tips to help you submit a succesful application.
The "Buzz" on Buzzwords
When writing a grant to a particular funder, make sure to do your homework to know the exact “buzz” words to get your application placed at the top of the stack. Corporations may be interested in “making an investment in their communities,” while advocacy funders probably want to see phrases that your program will “evoke policy change,” and foundations that focus heavily on evaluation may want to see “evidence-based theories” that produce “measurable results.”
But be careful that your buzzwords don’t become jargon. Make sure you clearly define terms like “lack of access” and “vulnerable populations.” Write your grant for the average person because the person reading your application may have limited experience in the field. As always, create a piece that connects the funder’s interests with your organization’s mission.
