Statement from CEO Lisa Williams-Taylor on family separation and trauma

Children’s Services Council of Palm Beach County is dedicated to ensuring children have the opportunity to grow up healthy, safe and strong. Therefore, we support keeping children with their families whenever that is in the best interest of the child.

The following statement is from CEO Lisa Williams-Taylor:

“All children – but especially those who have endured uncertainty, danger and trauma – need their loved ones to hold them, comfort them and ease their minds. Children in crisis who are unable to receive that kind of loving care are at risk for toxic stress, which can alter their brain chemistry and cause long-term physical and mental health issues.

“We know this from 20 years of well-documented research into adverse childhood experiences, which are often called ACEs. We also know this from our work with children and families in our local community. And we all know this instinctively from our personal experiences as parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, caregivers, mentors, teachers and more.

“We strongly believe children should not be removed from their parents, and we strongly believe those children who have been separated from their parents should be returned to their parents’ care as quickly as humanly possible to avoid social and emotional impairment for the child.”
