Palm Beach County School District students will walk with Safe Kids Palm Beach County members and FedEx volunteers on Wednesday, Oct. 10, to raise awareness about pedestrian safety for International Walk to School Day. Students at 47 elementary schools and middle schools in Palm Beach County will join the more than 250,000 children participating this month in International Walk to School Day events across the country.

Safe Kids Palm Beach County will have staff available for interviews, as well as photo and video opportunities, from 7-8 a.m. on Wednesday at:

H.L. Johnson Elementary School

1000 Crestwood Blvd. N, Royal Palm Beach

If you need to conduct interviews earlier for morning broadcasts, we will work to accommodate you. Please contact Kelly Powell, Safe Kids Program Director, at (C) 561-312-3770, to make arrangements.

The goal of the event is to teach safe walking skills and encourage the creation of safe walking environments. That includes teaching students that they should walk without distractions such as phones or headphones.

Safe Kids Palm Beach County is one of more than 50 programs funded by Children’s Services Council of Palm Beach County to help children grow up healthy, safe and strong.

“Every day, 44 children get hit by a car in the United States,” said Kelly Powell, the program director of Safe Kids Palm Beach County. “By walking with students on International Walk to School Day, we can show them how to walk safely.”

Sponsoring the local walks are FedEx and the AAA Traffic Safety Foundation.

To get to H.L. Johnson Elementary: Take Interstate-95 to Okeechobee Boulevard. Head west on Okeechobee Boulevard to Royal Palm Beach Boulevard. Go north on Royal Palm Beach Boulevard to Crestwood Blvd. N. The walk will be starting at H.L. Johnson Park, which is just north of the school.
